Have you ever heard the phrase: "Birds of a feather flock together."
Growing up, my mother was famous for two phrases: "Birds of a feather flock together." "One bad apple spoils the whole bunch." What was she really saying with those phrases? 1. You can become like the people, organizations, churches, or things that you consistently give your time and attention to. 2. Be careful who you allow into your home, your heart, and your fellowship. Someone who does not share the same vision can influence and disrupt what you are building. My mother's wisdom was actually teaching me something deeper: Know your identity. You don't have to become a member of everything or follow everyone when you are confident in who you are. So, the questions become: What is our identity? And why is it important to know who we are? Is our identity found in: • Our family lineage? • Our past? • Our education? • Our job? • Our hobbies or clubs? • A political association? • Our church? Knowing our identity gives us confidence and an inner sense of acceptance and belonging. Every human being wants to feel like they are "a part" of something. We want to feel accepted. But there are two paths we can take in discovering our identity: Through our relationship with the world, or through our relationship with God. Unfortunately, finding our identity through worldly affiliations provides only temporary gratification. People, positions, organizations, accomplishments, and affiliations cannot permanently fulfill the longing in our hearts. We were created to be in relationship with Someone far greater than any human affiliation. When we allow the world to define our identity, we can begin living with an imposter mindset. We become "wannabes." I want to be like... I want to dress like... I want to eat like... I want to live like... Think about the word "like." To be "like" someone or something means to resemble or imitate them. But God never intended for us to spend our lives trying to become someone else. Your true identity is found in your relationship with Jesus Christ. When you know who you belong to, you don't have to flock with every bird just because they are flying in the same direction. So, how do we discover our true identity? By allowing the Living God to transform our old mindset, our old ways, and even the traditions that have shaped how we see ourselves. And here's the question I want you to sit with: Who is defining you? Is it the world—or is it God? Because when you truly discover who you are in Christ, you no longer have to chase belonging. You know you belong. You no longer have to copy others. You can confidently become who God created you to be. Know your identity. Know who you belong to. And then you will know how to live with purpose. Rev. Georgetta Christian Empowerment & Budgeting Coach P.S.
